MANVEL, N.D. -- Multiple people were injured after the vehicle they were traveling in struck a moose Tuesday night on U.S. Highway 81, the Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.

The crash occurred near the corner of 20th Street Northeast and Highway 81 near Manvel about 10:30 p.m., Grand Forks Sheriff’s Lt. Gary Grove said Wednesday morning.

Two people, Blossom Contreras and Juan Noles, were injured in the crash and were transported to Altru Hospital. Both suffered face and head injuries from broken glass and from the impact of striking the moose.

The moose flew over the top of the vehicle, smashing both the front and rear windows. The moose was killed on impact, Grove said.

Joann Sanchez, Contreras’ mother, said her daughter and son-in-law are “hurting,” but have been released from the hospital. Sanchez said Contreras had surgery on her jaw Wednesday morning, which has been wired shut.

Noles, Contreras’ husband, suffered cuts and bruising to his face and head.

Sanchez said they are grateful that they are both alive.

A GoFundMe account has been set up for the family at www.gofundme.com/blossom-contreras-and-juan-noles.
