UND football program hires Nebraska assistant as running backs coach

The UND football program has a new running backs coach.

On Thursday, Fighting Hawks head coach Bubba Schweigert announced Malcolm Agnew will be the program’s running backs coach.

“He is an impressive young man that played running back at both the FBS and FCS levels,” Schweigert said. “He has already developed strong recruiting ties in the Midwest and Canada since graduating, and coupled with his knowledge of the running back position, will be a great fit for us here in Grand Forks."

UND’s running backs coach and recruiting coordinator during Schweigert’s tenure -- Kevin Maurice -- left after the 2016 season for a similar role at Eastern Washington. Schweigert has not named a recruiting coordinator.

Agnew spent the 2016 season at Nebraska, where he was a graduate manager, assisting with recruiting efforts.

Agnew is familiar with Schweigert from their time at Southern Illinois.

Agnew was a running back at Oregon State in 2011 and 2012, rushing for 692 yards and six touchdowns before transferring to SIU.

In two seasons with the Salukis, Agnew rushed for 1,708 yards. He signed an NFL free agent contract with the Green Bay Packers in 2015.

"After my playing career got cut short by injury, I knew I wanted to get into coaching and to be able to join a program that has a winning culture, great facilities and is on the rise in the FCS was a no-brainer," Agnew said.
