HIBBING, Minn. — There was a lot of screaming on the St. Louis County Courthouse campus in Hibbing on Thursday morning, Jan. 11. A group of 22 that work either in the courthouse or the nearby county annex were learning that they just won the lottery. "I was upstairs in my office and I could hear these guys hollering downstairs," said Angie Baumchen, facilities manager.
CHISHOLM, Minn. — A Chisholm city councilor is accused of groping a woman he approached at a bar last month. Kevin R. Scaia, 50, of Chisholm, has been summoned to appear in court Nov. 30 after a complaint was filed Thursday, Oct. 5. Surveillance footage shows the alleged groping incident about 1 a.m. Sept. 6 at the T&T Dome Bar, a Chisholm bar. Scaia is expected to be charged with fifth-degree criminal sexual conduct, a gross misdemeanor. Court documents state:
HIBBING, Minn. — Twin sisters Lily and Gracie Moe raced to the toy Tonka truck turned donation receptacle near the cashier's desk. The 8-year-old twins each had a dollar to give, as did their younger brother, Sam, 2, who stood on his tippy-toes to slip his buck in. The trio had just come from the grounds of the Hull Rust-Mahoning Mineview, where they climbed on the big tires, into the shovels and up and down the steps of the 170-ton mining truck. Grandma Terry Hanson was right behind them. "We're on an adventure," proclaimed Lily.
HIBBING, Minn. — A Kelly Lake woman who called to be rescued Thursday, Sept. 7, was found on mining property not too long after emergency services mobilized. Rose Looker, 47, called 911 just after noon reporting that she was lost. She was found around 2 p.m. Looker said she was out on her own and disoriented after becoming separated from her partner, who did not have a phone on him, while on a nature walk. They had been walking on the back of the Bottoms Road property since around 7 a.m. Thursday morning.
HIBBING, Minn. — The man who exchanged gunfire with Hibbing police officers in January following an altercation at a city residence has been criminally charged after recovering from gunshot wounds. Che N. Jones, 24, of Rochester, Minn., made his court appearance before Judge Mark M. Starr in Sixth District Court in Hibbing Monday. He was summoned to first appear on July 24. A hearing was held and continued until Monday when Jones was read his rights, formally charged with 11 felony charges and booked into the St. Louis County jail.
TOWER, Minn. — A Hibbing man has been arrested and is awaiting arraignment on several possible charges after an 11-month-old infant died in a house fire Wednesday, Aug. 2, in Tower.
HIBBING, Minn. — Just a couple hours after family and friends said their formal goodbyes at Brian Nelson’s funeral Tuesday, Hibbing police investigators put out a call for the public’s help. Nelson, 60, owner and operator of The Bottle Shop, was found murdered in his Hibbing residence near the liquor store at 2410 First Ave. around 4:45 p.m. Monday, July 10. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled his death as a homicide by “sharp force injuries,” according to Hibbing Police Investigator Jeff Adamich.
